LESSON #1

Each of these lesson files use Riff Interactive tab, download free plugin now!

Learn the notes on the E string this week. Do not try to memorize all of the strings at once.

Memorize the notes beginning at the B note(around the middle of the neck) and learn the notes above and below. Most general playing occurs between the 7th and 12th frets and the best tone is also created in this range. This is an extremely important step to becoming a good bass player, spending a good amount of time on this now will prove very valuable later. It will also help the learning process to say the note names aloud.

PATTERN #1 FOR THE G MAJOR SCALE

There are five patterns of the major scale. Memorize pattern #1 of the G major scale this week. Do not try to memorize all 5 patterns at once. By learning one new pattern each week, you will know them all in just one month. Remember that the letter R indicates the root note, the note that names the scale, in this case the root note is G for the G major scale.

FINGERING PATTERN FOR THE G MAJOR SCALE

Root notes are shown in the boxes.

Now let's move the G major scale up 2 frets.

PATTERN #1 OF THE A MAJOR SCALE

Memorize the A major scale pattern #1 this week. Remember that the letter R indicates the root note, the note that names the scale, in this case the root note is A for A major scale. Always use the correct fingering!

FINGERING PATTERN FOR THE A MAJOR SCALE

Root notes are shown in the boxes.

By now you may have noticed that the A major scale looks a lot like the G major scale. The patterns are identical, they even sound the same. If you move the A major scale up 2 more frets to the B position, and play the pattern exactly the same, you are playing the B major scale. Play pattern #1 with the root note starting on each of the notes of the E string. Name the scales out loud: B major scale pattern #1, C major scale pattern #1, etc.
